Our family are me Ewa, my lifepartner Magnus, our son Alexander (13 years), 3horses, one dog , and 6 Maine coon cats. We live on a farm in Mjäldrunga, Sweden.

My experience with animals goes a long way back.........................

Started with horses as a teenager. I had several horses of my own during 7-8 years. After that I got myself a couple of dogs, Leonbergers, which I did a lot of traveling to different exhibitions around Sweden. During this time I also worked as a dogtrainer for 3 years. When my last dog passed away, my interest for cats grew stronger.I also work in a petstore, witch specialize in cats and dog product, and I have been doing this for the last 6 years. Now a days I stay home with my animals. We had Maine coon cats for 13 years now.

My first meeting with Maine coon was love at first sight

They are big, magnificent, independent and looks like a lynx. They also twitter like birds! It couldnt be better! Ive been breeding Maine coon for 6 years. Today Ive have 6 cats who I exhibit as often as I can. I do this on a little scale,

I spend a lot of time with each kitten so they become socially stable before they find new owners. Before I sell them I also cut their claws and give them a bath. The kittens have gone through a veterinary inspection and had their vaccines and been dewormed 4 times before delivery, ID-chipped, and lifetime support from me........

I also very picky of whom I shose to be the owner of my babies, and you need to stay home with your new kitten at least for 1 week, but I prefer 2 weeks. I dont deliver the kittens before they are 14 weeks old ( 16 week for export) .

"THE AMERICAN GIANT WITH A HEART OF GOLD"

The Maine coon cat is a mixture of several types of long haired cats, that sailors from Maine brought home with them after their journeys. The Maine coon cats was popular to exhibit already in the 19th century. In the year 1818 you could se a couple of them in an exhibition in Boston. In Madison Square Garden, 1895, it was a Maine coon that got "BEST in SHOW".

In the beginning of the 1920s the brees disappeared from the American exhibits, because other exotic cats, some from Europe, had become more interesting. It became hard times for the Maine coon. In the year of 1959 the Maine coon breed was almost instinct and 1973 a newspaper wrote that it was. Of course it wasnt, it was very much alive and thanks to good breeders belives in the fairy tale the Maine coon breeders and Franciers association ( MCBFA) was founded 1968.After that all the Americans clubs accepted the Maine coon again. It was again allowed the right to registration and to get certificates. In the USA there are 5 different standards for the breed and if you include FIFe theres 6. Thats why the big differences in their look are quite confusing. The standard is almost like, but on certain things is it so unlike that the result is different looks. But the main details are same, such as size, lenght of the head and body and the quality of the fur.

"THE LOOK"'

Mother nature is hard, it picks out the biggest, strongest and the best hunters to guarantee the breeds continued existence. Maine coon is the result of such a natural selection. The cat is adapted to live in a rough climate. The fur, strong and resistant against water has no equal. Its tall were its supposed to protect against rain and snow and shorter on the places where it shouldnt get tangled in the undergrowth. The fur is soft and never hardly needs to be comed-once a week is often enough to keep it in good condition. The long, bushy tail, which the could sweeps around him when its time to sleep, also helps to keep warm during cold nights. The ears contains more fur than other breeds, (both on the in-and outside) to protect them from the cold and they also have a great ability to move. Big round, wellfured paws works as "snowshoes". The big eyes and ears are shaped to give the best possible sight and hearing. The relativity long square nose is shaped to make it easier to grip and hold the prey and to lick water. Maine coon grows fast and looks almost fully grown when they are six months old. When they are about one year old, the fast growth slows down but continues very slow until they are about five years old, when they are fully grown. They do keep much of the kittens joy fulness. The Maine coon sounds a lot different compared to other cats. They have a distinct sound, it reminds of the sound of a singing grasshopper. Other would say it sounds like the twitter of birds. This sound is used in the most different intentions, everything from complaining about the food isn´t good enough or to tell that "now I´m ready to play".Maine coon loves to play and is specially fond of "fetching". It doesnt mew a lot but when it does it has a soft voice that doesn´t mach the cat´s size. About the size of a Maine coon, you can hear the most amazing statements. Its very common with stories about cats around 20 kilograms (44lbs), but they are usually wrong or we are talking about extremely fat cats. The truth is that a full-grown male weights about 5-7 kilograms while the female weights about 4-6 kilograms. If you put these weights together with 5 centimeters of fur you have a cat that looks very big.

TEMPER

Maine coon is a kind, rool and charming cat. Its also playful. A very good way of describing the Maine coon temperament is friendly. They get on well with other cats. Of course there can be exceptions but mainly the Maine coon is very easy to keep with other pets. A special peculiarity with the Maine coon is the sound. Mostly it doesnt say "miaow" like other cats, it sounds like "brrp". The Maine coon is a very easy cat. Its uncomplicated and healthy. We, who do have Maine coon since a way back, can guarantee that when you get a cat of this wonderful breed you are going to get another one and another one and.......................................

HEALTH

The health of our cats and kittens is very important to us. Genetic diseases exist among all cats, pedigreed or non-pedigreed. Then different breeds might have different diseases that are more common than the other. To maintain and improve health in the breed and in our cats. Al our adult cats are tested for FELV / FIV / Chlamydia negative, and vaccinated against Chlamydia.

HIP DYSPHASIA (HD)

HD is an inherited malformation of the hip joint, that is less severe cases doesnt cause a cat any problems. In severe cases however the cat might get pain from it and problems to jump and even walk. HD is probably inherited polygenetic, meaning that many genes are involved. This means that breeding for better hips is similar to breeding for large size in cats. You might get a large cat out of two small parents, but it is less likely than getting a large cat out of two large parents. And sure you might get a small cat out of two large parents, but it is less likely than getting a small cat out of two small parents, or out of one large and one small. In the same way you might get a kitten with severe HD out of two parents with good hips, and you might get a kitten with good hips out of two parents with severe HD. But is not very likely. So what we should do is to breed from the cats with the best hips. We must however be careful not to be too hard here, so that not too few cats are used for breeding. Otherwise our wish to avoid HD might result in a too narrow genepool, leading to inbreeding. And the inbreeding might then cause other problems. Because of this, we have been recomended to for the moment, also breed from cats with the mildest degree of HD. Of course we then mate those cats with cats whose hips are good. We test our cats hips by x-raying them at the age of 1 year or later. The x-ray pictures then are sent to OFA in United States.

HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY (HCM)

HCM is a genetic heart disease that exicts in several breeds, as well as non-pedigree cats. Unfortunately this has become a problem in our breed too. The disease make the hart grow thicker and thicker until it is no longer capable of pumping the blood in an effective way any longer. Then the cat of course will die. HCM is generally not all until the cat suddenly dies. But with an ultrasound test, the disease is detectable earlier. But still usually not in a kitten. The disease takes longer to develop. In males it is usually possible to detect at 2 years of age, while in females it takes in average longer to develop. In females most cases can be detected at 3 years of age. HCM is, according to American studies, inherited by a single dominant gene with incomplete penetrance. This means that even if only one of the parents carries the gene, the offspring's have a 50% risk of getting it and they can then potentially get the disease. The incomplete penetrance means that not all cats with the gene will actually develop the disease. A few cats simply carry the gene without ever showing any signs of it. But all the cats that carry the gene MIGHT be Develop. HCM, and most do. By testing for HCM we reduce the risk of breeding from cats who carry this gene. The tests are not 100% sure though, mainly because of the incomplete penetrance. It is a complicated disease, and more research is needed. But at the moment ultrasound testing is the best tool we have to control it and to reduce the risks.
